Cherry vs OEM Profile: How to Pick the Right Keycaps

Cherry vs OEM keycap profiles are compared by height, top shape, sound, feel, and selection, with practical guidance for choosing between them.

Cherry vs OEM comes down to one thing first: OEM is the taller profile and Cherry is lower, and for the overwhelming majority of mechanical keyboards these are the two sculpted profiles you actually choose between. Most buyers never seriously consider the exotic profiles. What OEM profile is

OEM profile is a sculpted keycap family with cylindrical tops. In Keychron’s comparison it sits higher than Cherry profile, with a different row contour. Each physical row has an intended shape; the profile name does not mean every key has the same height.

OEM is a profile description, not a guarantee that all stock keyboards or all manufacturers use identical caps. Confirm the profile on your keyboard’s product page before buying a matching replacement. If the exact stock shape matters, compare a side diagram from the replacement set’s maker.

An OEM set can be sold in different plastics and with different printing methods. The word “OEM” therefore does not establish whether the legends are doubleshot, whether they transmit light, or whether the kit contains an ISO Enter.

What Cherry profile is

Cherry profile is a lower sculpted cylindrical profile in Keychron’s comparison. Its row-specific key shapes distinguish it from uniform profiles such as DSA and XDA. An aftermarket product labeled Cherry profile is describing the shape; that label alone does not identify its manufacturer.

“What are Cherry keycaps?” can also refer to caps sold by CHERRY itself. Read the product listing to distinguish the brand from the profile. For a third-party Cherry-profile set, check the stated mount and kit coverage independently.

Cherry profile does not change a switch’s rated actuation distance or guarantee a particular typing speed. Its practical role in this comparison is the keytop shape and height you prefer, provided the caps and their rows fit the keyboard.

Why these two dominate

OEM is what the vast majority of pre-built mechanical keyboards ship with from the factory. Cherry is the de facto enthusiast and group-buy standard — a large share of custom keycap sets are produced in Cherry. Between them they cover the standard sculpted-keyboard world. If you have a normal staggered layout, your choice is almost always Cherry or OEM; everything else is a deliberate detour. Worth keeping in proportion, though: profile is only one of the five axes that describe a set, alongside plastic, legend method, stem and mount, and kit coverage. What “sculpted” and “cylindrical” actually mean

Both terms apply equally to Cherry and OEM, so it is worth locking down the vocabulary before comparing them.

Sculpted means each row is a different height and sits at a different forward-tilt angle. The manufacturer assigns different heights and angles to the physical rows. Follow its own row diagram rather than assuming every vendor numbers rows the same way. The opposite of sculpted is uniform, where every row is identical — profiles like XDA or DSA, covered in our keycap profiles overview.

Cylindrical means the top surface of each key curves side to side, like a shallow trough, so your fingertip lands in a slight valley rather than on a flat or spherical dome. The opposite is spherical, where the key curves in all directions like a concave dish — the shape used on SA profile caps.

Cherry and OEM share both characteristics. What separates them is height and the degree of sculpt between rows.

The core difference: height and top shape

Cherry and OEM are both sculpted and both cylindrical-topped. Their family resemblance is real — these are cousins, not opposites.

The differences:

  • Height. OEM is taller. Cherry sits lower. Published profile measurements put OEM at roughly 11.9 mm at its tallest point against about 9.3–9.4 mm for Cherry, a gap of roughly 2.5 mm (figures vary slightly by manufacturer and row). This is the single most reliable distinction and the one you feel first. The cap height does not change the switch’s rated travel.
  • Top surface. Cherry’s top is generally flatter and broader with a subtle scoop. OEM’s top is slightly more rounded and a little narrower. The practical effect is that Cherry can feel like it has marginally more “landing pad” while OEM’s top guides the finger a touch more.
  • Angle of the rows. Both sculpt the rows, but the row-to-row transition feels gentler on Cherry to many typists, contributing to Cherry’s reputation as the “neutral, get-out-of-the-way” profile. These are real but modest differences. Nobody mistakes SA for Cherry; plenty of people cannot immediately tell Cherry from OEM in a photo. You feel the difference more than you see it.

Sound

Height and internal cavity volume influence sound, as covered in our thickness and sound guide — a taller keycap has more air to resonate. OEM, being taller with a slightly larger cavity, often trends a hair deeper and more resonant than Cherry; Cherry, lower and frequently thinner on stock factory caps, can sound a touch higher and sharper. The gap is small and easily overridden by switch type, plate, case material, and PCB mounting. Do not choose between Cherry and OEM primarily for sound — the difference is minor and inconsistent across sets. Other factors dwarf it.

Feel and typing posture

The height difference has a small but real ergonomic dimension. OEM’s extra height places the top of each keycap slightly further from the switch, so a keystroke covers a touch more visible distance and the back rows sit a little higher relative to the home row. Some typists read this as OEM feeling marginally more “engaged” or deliberate; others find Cherry’s lower stance quicker and less fatiguing over long sessions because the reach to the upper rows is shorter.

This is genuinely subtle — neither profile imposes the posture change that a tall profile like SA does, and neither typically calls for a wrist rest the way SA often does. Cherry is also comfortable across a wide range of switch weights and typing styles without imposing any strong sensory signature of its own, which is a large part of why it became the custom-keyboard default.

If you are coming from a factory pre-built, you are almost certainly adapted to OEM already, which is part of why OEM feels “normal” to so many people: it is simply what most keyboards taught their fingers. Moving from OEM to Cherry usually takes only a brief, easy adjustment; owners commonly report feeling at home on the new profile within a day. The reverse — Cherry to OEM — is equally painless. This low switching cost is itself a useful fact: trying both is cheap in adaptation terms, so if you can borrow or sample each, do, because the feel difference is one you confirm with fingertips far more reliably than from a spec or a photo.

Availability and selection

This is where the practical answer often gets decided:

  • Cherry has the deepest aftermarket and group-buy selection. The majority of premium PBT dye-sub and ABS doubleshot sets are produced in Cherry. If you want a specific enthusiast colorway, themed set, or boutique release, the odds are strongly that it exists in Cherry — and it may not exist in OEM at all. The enthusiast ecosystem is built around Cherry.
  • OEM is ubiquitous and cheap. OEM is everywhere at the budget end: stock caps from major keyboard brands, budget replacement sets, and cheap aftermarket PBT blanks. It is an easy, inexpensive standard, but the most coveted artisan-grade colorways are less commonly OEM and selection at the enthusiast tier is thinner.

So selection often makes the decision for you: if you are shopping enthusiast colorways and group buys, you will mostly be choosing among Cherry sets regardless of preference. If you are replacing worn-out stock caps on a pre-built or buying the cheapest set that will do the job, you will mostly encounter OEM.

Compatibility notes

Both are standard MX-stem sculpted profiles, so the usual compatibility checks apply equally: confirm MX stems, check bottom-row widths (spacebar, modifier sizes), and ANSI vs ISO. One profile-specific point: because both are sculpted, both are row-specific. Cherry vs OEM for gaming and typing

A common question is whether one profile is better for gaming versus typing. The honest answer is that the difference is too small to be decisive for either, and no competitive result hinges on it. That said, the height difference does map onto two mild tendencies:

  • Typing. The profiles present different heights and row shapes. The keycap profiles guide now includes the typing decision framework, without claiming a universal speed or comfort ranking.
  • Gaming. OEM’s extra height gives a slightly taller, more pronounced keytop to find under the finger, which is part of why most gaming pre-builts ship OEM. Some players like that added presence; it is a preference, not a performance advantage.

If you are coming from a stock keyboard you are almost certainly already adapted to OEM, so “what feels normal” is doing a lot of the work here. Either profile is fine for both tasks, and switch choice, board, and your own muscle memory matter far more than the Cherry-vs-OEM height gap. Which should you pick?

A clear rule:

  • Default to Cherry. It is lower, widely described as comfortable and neutral, and — critically — it has by far the best selection of quality colorways and group buys. For most enthusiasts, “I want a nice keycap set” effectively means a Cherry set. It is also the sensible starting point if you have no strong existing preference.
  • Choose OEM if you specifically like a slightly taller profile, you are buying inexpensively or replacing caps on a pre-built that already came in OEM and you liked the feel, or the exact set you want only comes in OEM.
  • Do not agonize. This is the smallest meaningful profile decision in the hobby. Both are comfortable, familiar, sculpted profiles. The taller-vs-lower preference is mild, the switching cost is minimal, and selection will often settle it for you anyway.

The honest verdict

Cherry and OEM are close relatives: both sculpted, both cylindrical-topped, OEM taller and OEM-ier in feel, Cherry lower and the enthusiast standard. The difference is genuine but small, far smaller than Cherry-vs-SA or sculpted-vs-uniform. Pick Cherry for selection and a low, neutral feel; pick OEM if you like a bit more height or it is what your set comes in. Then move on and spend your decision-making energy on the choices that actually matter more — legend method and kit coverage will affect your daily experience far more than the Cherry-vs-OEM coin flip.
