Keycap Profiles Explained: Shapes, Rows, and Typing
Compare keycap profiles by sculpt, top shape, and typing preferences, with Cherry, OEM, SA, MT3, KAT, DSA, XDA, and kit coverage explained.
Keycap profiles describe a keycap’s height, the shape of its top, and how those shapes change between keyboard rows. Cherry and OEM use sculpted rows; DSA and XDA use a uniform shape. The useful choice is the shape you prefer that also covers your keyboard, not a universal ranking of typing speed.

Sculpted vs uniform keycap profiles
A sculpted set uses different angles or heights for different rows. Signature Plastics classifies DCS and SA as sculpted families. A key from the number row can therefore differ from a key carrying a modifier legend near the spacebar. The distinction concerns the plastic’s shape, even if the keyboard software lets either switch send any character.
A uniform set repeats one row shape. Signature Plastics classifies DSA and G20 this way. Moving a same-width key between rows preserves its profile, which makes rearranging legends simpler. Uniform does not mean that every key has the same width, or that the set includes enough modifiers for a split board.
Think of row shape as a constraint when shopping for replacements. If a sculpted set lacks the correct Delete key for a compact keyboard’s side column, another Delete cap might attach but sit at a different angle. With a uniform set, a matching width and mount avoid that particular row mismatch.
Both forms can work on staggered, ortholinear, or split layouts when the kit supplies the needed keys. A split keyboard does not automatically require uniform keycaps, and a staggered keyboard does not automatically require sculpted ones.
Cylindrical, spherical, and flat tops
Profile names also describe the surface your fingertip meets. A cylindrical dish curves primarily along one axis; a spherical dish curves in two directions. A flat top omits the dish. Signature Plastics’ family specifications identify DCS as cylindrical, DSA and SA as spherical, and G20 as flat.
These are separate properties from row shape. DSA and SA both have spherical tops while differing in their row arrangements. Cherry and OEM share cylindrical tops, so choosing between them is mostly a comparison of their particular heights and sculpt.
A product’s top-down photograph often hides these differences. Look for a side diagram and the manufacturer’s profile name. A render of rounded corners does not tell you whether the surface itself is dished, and a close-up of one key does not establish the shape of every row.

The sculpted profiles, one by one
Cherry and OEM
Keychron describes both as sculpted profiles with cylindrical tops and puts Cherry lower than OEM. They are useful reference points if you are replacing an existing sculpted set: check what your current keyboard actually uses, then decide whether you want to retain that shape or change it.
OEM means a family of stock-style keycaps in this context. It does not certify that two manufacturers use identical molds. Equally, Cherry profile is a shape description on aftermarket listings, not proof that CHERRY made the caps.

SA
Signature Plastics describes SA as its high, spherical, sculpted family. Its height and bowl-shaped tops give it a visibly different form from Cherry. Check the kit diagram rather than assuming every SA offering contains a complete set of different rows: a kit can repeat a single row shape.
SA belongs on a shortlist when you specifically want a tall spherical profile. That is a preference, not a requirement for a particular sound or a reason to rule it out for typing. The SA profile guide covers the family in more detail.
MT3
Das Keyboard describes MT3 as sculpted, with distinctive angles and pronounced concave tops. It is an alternative for someone who wants more dish than the cylindrical profiles provide. The shape is enough to distinguish it without claiming that it prevents mistakes or increases accuracy.
Compare the actual MT3 kit with the rows your keyboard uses. Extra modifiers and alternate bottom-row pieces still matter. A deep dish cannot substitute for a missing spacebar or the wrong stem mount.
KAT
KAT is a sculpted spherical option. The cited profile guides place it below SA in their broad height comparisons, but one profile-wide number cannot describe every row from every set. Use the row diagram when height is decisive.
KAT and KAM are easy names to confuse. KAT changes shape by row; KAM uses a uniform arrangement. When a listing says only that the design is available in both, select the intended profile before comparing the kit contents.
DCS
DCS is Signature Plastics’ sculpted cylindrical family. Its own row map deserves attention: use the company’s DCS diagram to match a physical row, rather than transferring a row number from another manufacturer’s catalog.
That makes an isolated label such as “R3” insufficient when mixing individual keys from different catalogs. Match the family, physical row, and vendor diagram. A cap described with the same row number in another profile is not necessarily a replacement.
The uniform profiles, one by one
DSA and XDA
Both repeat their shape across rows. DSA has a spherical top in Signature Plastics’ specification; XDA offers a broader shallow dish in the cited profile overviews. Choosing between them means comparing the actual top shape and kit, rather than deciding which one is inherently more accurate.
Their practical benefit is flexibility when moving same-width legends between rows. For a macropad, this can simplify the inventory. It does not turn a wide Shift key into a 1u key, or make one supplied modifier cover two positions.
KAM and G20
KAM keeps a spherical top with a uniform row arrangement. G20 uses a flat top according to Signature Plastics. They illustrate why uniform is only the first filter: two uniform sets can present quite different fingertip surfaces.
If a shop offers several uniform profiles, first compare the kit diagrams for missing widths. Then compare the cap shape. A profile that looks ideal but has no suitable thumb-cluster keys is a poor match for that particular build.
Other names: ASA, OSA, MOA, and MDA
Akko’s profile guide distinguishes ASA’s medium sculpted form from the taller sculpt of OSA and the uniform, rounded form of MOA. These names identify different shapes; they are not alternate spellings for SA, OEM, or Cherry. Read the specific product’s profile field before ordering.
MDA also appears in broader profile catalogs. Avoid assuming its row arrangement solely from a comparison chart: use the actual manufacturer’s set diagram. A similar height or spherical top does not establish identical row shapes or compatibility.

Best keycap profile for typing: a decision guide
There is no supported universal winner for typing accuracy or speed in the sources used here. Their descriptions can help you choose a shape, but they do not establish a controlled ranking for your hands, keyboard angle, or typing habits.
Use your current setup as the reference. Record the profile if known, whether you like the dish, and whether you want the keytops higher or lower. These observations produce a more useful shortlist than an unexplained comfort score.

A small sample can answer whether you like a keytop’s dish, but a single cap cannot demonstrate the reach across a full keyboard. If you have access to a complete set, compare it on a setup you know. Keep the return policy in mind when purchasing a profile you have never used.
Height, sound, and switch travel
Keycap height describes the cap, not the switch’s actuation specification. Changing a profile does not turn a standard switch into a low-profile mechanism or automatically shorten its rated travel. Clearance problems are a separate fit issue.
Similarly, a profile label alone does not promise a sound. Recordings include a whole keyboard: switches, stabilizers, case, plate, and the particular cap set. Use the keycap thickness and sound guide to understand those variables without treating a profile as an acoustic rating.

Check coverage before choosing a colorway
The final shortlist still needs a complete kit. Check the switch mount, spacebar width, modifier sizes, ISO or ANSI Enter, and the row of each special key. Uniform profiles simplify the row check but leave the other requirements intact.
